Epitalon
The longevity market's telomerase peptide. The human evidence comes from one research group, has never been replicated, and is the thinnest Tier C on this site.
The short answer
Epitalon carries the most extraordinary claims in this catalogue and the least independent support for them. The proposition is that a four amino acid peptide activates telomerase, lengthens telomeres and extends lifespan, and the human work behind it comes almost entirely from a single Russian research group led by the person who developed it, including long term follow up studies reporting reduced mortality in elderly cohorts. No independent group anywhere has reproduced those findings. We place it at Tier C because single network research without replication is exactly what our Tier C describes, and we would say plainly that it sits at the bottom of that tier. Extraordinary claims about lifespan require more than one laboratory, and after two decades there is still only one.

What it is
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide, alanine glutamate aspartate glycine, at 390.3 Da. It was derived from epithalamin, an extract of the pineal gland, as an attempt to identify the active fragment. The mechanistic claim is telomerase activation, with secondary claims around pineal function and melatonin regulation.
Who it is for, and who actually takes it
There is no approved population anywhere. The Russian studies were conducted largely in elderly cohorts, framed around age related decline.
It is bought by the longevity community, usually in short repeated courses, on the strength of the telomere claim. It is one of the most popular compounds in that market and one of the least supported.
What the research shows
The mortality and telomere findings come from a single unreplicated research network. Rendering them as a chart beside independently verifiable trial data would lend them a credibility the evidence has not earned.
Dosing
We report only what published research used, and here that means courses of injections administered in Russian studies of elderly cohorts, published by the group that developed the compound. Those parameters come from an unreplicated literature and are recorded as research context, not as a protocol. We publish no schedule and no reconstitution guidance.
What happens when you come off it
There is no meaningful discontinuation data. The claimed effects are framed as durable changes to cellular ageing rather than as something that wears off, which is a claim that would need long term controlled follow up to test and has not received it outside the originating group.
What it is being studied for
| Area | Stage of evidence |
|---|---|
| Telomerase activation | In vitro work from the originating group, not independently replicated |
| Lifespan and mortality in elderly cohorts | Russian follow up studies, single network, not replicated |
| Pineal function and melatonin rhythm | Preclinical and small human work, single network |
| Retinal degeneration | Studied within the same literature |
| Any outcome confirmed by an independent group | None that we can identify |
The final row is the one that matters. Twenty years of publication from one institute, and no independent laboratory has confirmed the central finding.
Common myths
Epitalon lengthens telomeres and extends lifespan.
That is the claim. The evidence is in vitro and cohort work from the group that created the compound, never independently reproduced. Telomere length is also a contested surrogate: longer is not straightforwardly better, and telomerase activation is the mechanism by which many cancers achieve replicative immortality.
It is proven in human trials.
There are human studies. They come from one research network, are published largely in Russian, and have not been replicated. Existence of a study and independent confirmation of a result are different standards, and lifespan claims should be held to the higher one.
It is safe because it is only four amino acids.
Size has nothing to do with safety. If the telomerase claim were true it would carry a real theoretical oncological concern, since that is precisely the pathway involved. The claim and the reassurance cannot both be taken at face value simultaneously.
A 99.6% purity certificate means you got what you paid for.
Not on this product. The published lot report for this vendor shows 99.60% purity and 44.05 mg against a 50 mg label, an underfill of nearly 12%. Purity describes what fraction of the material is the right molecule. Content describes how much is in the vial. This is the clearest example in the catalogue of why you read both.
Verifying a purchase
Epitalon is a tetrapeptide at 390.3 Da with CAS 307297-39-8, about as small and cheap as peptides get, so identity confirmation by mass spectrometry is essential rather than optional. Read the content figure as carefully as the purity figure: this vendor's own published lot came in at 44.05 mg against a 50 mg label. That is a documented 11.9% shortfall on a vial sold by weight, and it is to the vendor's credit that the report is published at all, since most sellers would not show you that number.
The general method is set out in our guide to reading a certificate of analysis, which covers the eleven checks that apply to any compound. The points above are the ones specific to Epitalon.
Caveats and safety
There is no Western safety database. If the telomerase mechanism is real, the theoretical oncological concern is real with it, and neither has been resolved. If the mechanism is not real, the compound is an expensive inert powder. Both possibilities are live and the available evidence does not distinguish between them.

Scope. This is an evidence review, not medical advice. Where an approved label schedule is reproduced it is a record of what a regulator has published about a licensed medicine, not a recommendation and not a schedule for anyone to follow unsupervised. For unapproved compounds we report only the doses used in published studies, attributed to those studies, and we publish no protocols and no reconstitution guidance for any compound. Regulatory status differs between countries and changes over time. Material sold for laboratory research is not approved for human use. Decisions about treatment belong with a qualified prescriber.
